The hidden risks of dental tourism: When a cheaper smile comes at a devastating cost
This was a particularly harrowing tale of British man who suffered a brain injury following dental treatment in Turkey. The video is truly sobering and we have shared some of our thoughts below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwVimg2Xlho
The appeal of travelling overseas for dental treatment is easy to understand. With the cost of dentistry continuing to rise, countries such as Turkey have become increasingly popular destinations for patients seeking affordable high-end treatment.
But a recent story featured on ITV's This Morning provides a sobering reminder of why patients should think carefully before committing to extensive dental treatment overseas.
Martin Karant travelled to Turkey in 2024 hoping to restore his smile and regain the ability to chew comfortably. His proposed treatment included two tooth extractions, nine dental implants, a bone graft and a sinus lift.
However, approximately three months after his initial treatment, Martin became seriously ill with a sinus infection that spread to his brain.
The consequences were devastating. Martin underwent five brain surgeries, required a titanium plate to be fitted into his skull, and was left having to relearn basic functions including walking and talking. He also lost the ability to run his previously successful business.
When asked what he would say to others considering dental treatment overseas, Martin's response was simple: "I nearly died and don't do it."
It's not just about the price of treatment
One of the most important points raised during the interview was the difference between the cost of the procedure itself and the broader care that should accompany it.
When comparing dental treatment overseas with treatment at home, it is tempting to compare individual items – the price of an implant, a crown or a veneer. But comprehensive dental care involves considerably more.
It includes:
Thorough assessment and diagnosis before treatment.
Careful consideration of alternative treatment options.
Appropriate management of existing dental infections.
Time for proper planning and healing between procedures.
Ongoing monitoring and access to professional aftercare.
Clear accountability if complications arise.
Extensive dental procedures are not always straightforward, and complications can sometimes emerge weeks or months after treatment. Having access to the treating dental team, appropriate follow-up and a clear pathway for managing complications is particularly important.
What should patients consider before travelling overseas?
If you are considering dental treatment abroad, there are several important steps worth taking before making a commitment.
1. Seek an independent opinion first. Have a consultation with a dentist in Australia before agreeing to extensive treatment. Understand all the available options, including less invasive alternatives.
2. Be cautious of extensive treatment offered very quickly. Complex procedures require proper assessment and planning. Be wary of clinics promising dramatic results within a very short timeframe.
3. Understand exactly what is being done to your teeth. Ask whether healthy tooth structure will need to be removed, what the long-term implications are, and whether the treatment is reversible.
4. Investigate aftercare arrangements. What happens if you develop an infection or another complication once you return home? Who is responsible for managing it, and who will cover the additional costs?
5. Don't rely solely on online reviews or celebrity endorsements. Look beyond marketing and investigate the qualifications, experience and regulatory standards of the clinicians undertaking your treatment.
At Northbridge Dentists, we believe that good dentistry begins with understanding each patient's individual needs and considering the long-term consequences of any proposed treatment.
Cosmetic dentistry can deliver wonderful results, but it should never be rushed or undertaken without a thorough understanding of the risks, benefits and alternatives.
Martin's story is an extremely unfortunate reminder that when it comes to your dental health, the cheapest option is not necessarily the best value.
Sometimes, the most important investment is taking the time to get the right advice before treatment begins.
